The California Department of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) Medical Unit has announced that applications are now being accepted for the next QME Competency Exam, which will be given on April 18, 2020. QMEs are physicians that have been certified by the DWC Medical Unit to examine injured workers for the purpose of determining contested medical issues in a Workers’ Compensation claim.

There has been a growing demand for QMEs in recent years, so now is the perfect time for physicians who are interested in medical-legal work to take the upcoming exam to become a QME. Most medical professionals are eligible to become QMEs including chiropractors, psychologists and acupuncturists, but the specialties in the highest demand are Orthopedic Surgery, Pain Medicine, Psychiatry, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), Dermatology, Otolaryngology (ENT) and Gastroenterology. The deadline to register for the exam is March 5, 2020.

For physicians considering med-legal work, California Medical Evaluators offers a Pre-QME Program designed to provide physicians with everything they need to be prepared to pass the QME Competency exam, including access to online QME education, test prep courses, study guides, exam registration assistance and a DWC approved QME 12-hour Report Writing Course.

California Medical Evaluators also offers a unique QME Starter Program designed specifically for newly appointed QMEs. As part of the program, California Medical Evaluators provides comprehensive QME practice management services, allowing physicians to be physicians without having to worry about the administrative details involved with managing a QME practice.
