What is a Fitness for Duty Evaluation (FFDE)?

An FFDE is a medical or psychological evaluation requested by an employer with the purpose of determining whether an employee is able to perform essential job functions. An employer may also request an FFDE for a job applicant after a job offer has been extended, especially if the applicant has asked for an accommodation during the hiring process.

When would a Fitness for Duty Evaluation be appropriate?

It’s important to note that employers can only require an FFDE if the examination is job-related and consistent with business necessity. Some instances that might call for an FFDE would be:

  • If an employer feels that an employee can’t perform his/her job safely and successfully due to a medical or psychological condition.
  • If an employer feels that an employee might be a danger to himself/herself, clients, co-workers or the public because of a medical or psychological condition.
  • If an employee returns to work after taking leave due to illness.

Where should an FFDE take place?

A Fitness for Duty Evaluation may take place anywhere an employee is willing to travel, but out of convenience for the employee, it is best to find a physician who can do the evaluation as close to the employee’s place of residence or employment as possible.

What type of physician should be used for an FFDE?

It depends on the case. The specialties most often requested for FFDEs are psychiatry, neuropsychology, neurology, psychology, cardiology, internal medicine and orthopedic surgery. Psychiatric Fitness for Duty Evaluations are particularly common. However, other specialties may also be requested depending on the situation.
