Over the last several years, there has been an increase in the number of requests for Psychiatric Independent Medical Examinations (IMEs) in Los Angeles.  For a variety of situations, a board certified psychiatrist evaluates the psychiatric condition of an individual in the past and/or present.  Elements of a psychiatric IME (often referred to as Psych IME) vary from case to case and depend on what questions the defense is attempting to answer. A psychiatrists will use their skills, experience and sometimes diagnostic studies (such as psychological tests) to make a formal diagnosis, render an expert opinion as to the causation of the problems, determine the need for treatment and/or recommendation treatment.  During a psychiatric IME, the psychiatrist will spend time one-on-one with the person, obtaining a relevant history, review records, test results, sometimes question collateral informants and synthesize all of this information to arrive at a diagnosis and conclusions.  The result is an expert medical opinion, reached with a reasonable medical probability.
